The award-winning author and illustrator Jason Chin visited Eagle, Glenmont and Hamagrael elementary schools this week.
Known for his stunning watercolor illustrations and captivating storytelling, Chin has received numerous honors including the 2022 Caldecott medal for his illustrations in Watercress by Andrea Wang, a Caldecott Honor for Grand Canyon, a Sibert Honor and the NATE Orbis Pictus Award for Grand Canyon.
During his presentations, Chin gave students a behind-the-scenes look at his writing and illustrating process, including how some of his books underwent up to 45 drafts before reaching their final form. Chin emphasized the importance of verifying your sources during research to guarantee that the information you present is accurate and reliable. Each of Chin’s illustrations is painted with watercolors, a medium he loves for its fluidity and expressiveness. Chin described the process of soaking and stretching his own paper for each painting, ensuring it’s the perfect surface to bring his vibrant scenes to life. Demonstrating that great art and storytelling take time and patience, he encouraged students to embrace the process of revision and perseverance.
A highlight of each visit was when Chin worked with students on their own sketches. Chin explained that while he was drawing an example, there is no right or wrong when it comes to art, “My way is right for me. Your way is right for you.” A simple yet powerful message encouraging students to embrace their unique artistic approaches.
Thank you to Jason Chin, Library Media Specialists; Monica Parmenter, Cailie Hafener and Angela Datri as well as the Eagle PTO, Glenmont PTA and Hamagrael PTA for making these visits possible!
