An important message from Superintendent Jody Monroe

An important message for BCSD families and staff members from Superintendent Jody Monroe…

Dear BC community member:

I am writing with an update regarding the phone threat received by the Bethlehem Police Department at approximately 8:40 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 10. The threat was directed at the high school, with the caller saying they were going to “shoot up Bethlehem High School.” The police department immediately began an investigation and notified the school district on Tuesday evening.

As of 3 p.m. today, Wednesday, Sept. 11, the anonymous caller has not yet been identified, nor has the location of the phone call’s origination been determined. The school district will continue to cooperate with the police department in its investigation. If we receive pertinent information related to the investigation that we are allowed to share, we will do so as soon as possible.

Anyone who may have information related to this incident is asked to contact the Bethlehem Police Department at 518-439-9973 or call 911.

The district’s administrative team has been working closely with police officials since last night to ensure appropriate safety protocols are in place at all schools and that police officers are available to provide additional security at our buildings. Officers were stationed both inside and outside the high school and middle school throughout the day on Wednesday, and officer patrols were added at each of the elementary schools, with officers on site for arrival and dismissal. The police will also monitor activity at the schools during non-instructional hours and overnight.

The added police presence at our schools will continue tomorrow, Thursday, Sept. 12. We appreciate the police department’s partnership with the district.

Please know that when an emergency arises, the district works diligently to make operational decisions and put together a response plan that maintains the safety of students and staff. We also do our best to share verified factual information with families and staff as quickly as possible. Depending on the situation, this information-gathering phase can involve multiple parties and takes time to ensure accuracy.

Emergency messages are sent via ParentSquare. The email address and phone number stored in ParentSquare is used to notify you of an emergency situation. Please check ParentSquare to verify your contact information is correct. If you have questions regarding ParentSquare, email  bcsdcommunications@bethlehemschools.org

We strive to create a safe and supportive school environment for students and staff every day, even in times of uncertainty. Please know that school administrators, our counseling team and human resources are always available and are ready to help.

Thank you for your continued support.

Sincerely,

Jody Monroe

Superintendent
