Local author to visit Slingerlands on May 22 and 23
Local author James Preller is visiting Slingerlands Elementary for two days on May 22-23. His published work includes readers, picture books, and chapter books. He is perhaps best known for his fiction series for young readers, Jigsaw Jones. He will be meeting with all K-5 classes in the library to discuss his books and the writing process, and he will autograph books as well. He lives in Delmar with his family. This Author visits is part of a series of visits to BCSD's schools organized by the school librarians in collaboration with building teachers and PTAs. Attention Incoming Kindergartners
This year we will be holding 'Kindergarten Camp" for all incoming Slingerlands kindergarten students. On June 5th from 3:45 – 4:30 p.m. parents and children are invited to Slingerlands to experience a slice of kindergarten. The children will spend 45 minutes in a class with a kindergarten teacher to get a feel for what school will be like. During that time, the parent orientation will be held in the gymnasium. A letter went home last week with the details of our new adventure. Please call the school if you have any questions. Parent Orientation on May 2nd was canceled.

A reminder for our fifth grade parents...
Some of you may receive e-mail notices from our school. These are sent via our School News Notifier (SNN) system, which you are not automatically enrolled in, and must sign up for on your own.
You may be enrolled in the Slingerlands message list, but keep in mind that as your student transitions to the middle school, you'll need to sign up for the BCMS message list. READ MORE »
Reading Buddies Volunteers
Our new Reading Buddies program is looking for Volunteers to work with our K-2 students. If you have previously worked with our Jump Start program or you have an hour a week to volunteer to work with some of our young students, Reading Buddies welcomes you! Training will be provided. Please contact Jane Fronheiser at Janee79@aol.com.
1000 Book Project
The 1000 Book Project is a voluntary, read-aloud program offered to students in kindergarten and first grade. This project is only made possible with the help of dedicated, parent volunteers whom distribute bags every day except for Wednesday. We are currently in need of extra help with the bag exchange for Tuesdays and Thursdays. If you are interested and would like to learn more, please contact the following Co-Chairs: MaryElizabeth Metcalf (meplaine@yahoo.com) or Nicole Doyle (lukeynay@hotmail.com). Thank you so much for your consideration.
Carnival Date Change
For all the planners out there: The Slingerlands Carnival will be on June 7 this year, NOT on May 31.
CFK eCYCLING
Do you have an empty ink jet cartridge? An old cell phone? Laptop?
Send them to Slingerlands Elementary and help earn cash for our
school! A flyer is coming home this week with your child. There is a
collection bin in the lobby at school so feel free to drop them off
or send them to school with your child.
Thanks for your support!
