French students honored at Union College

On March 15, BCHS French students participated in this year’s National French Contest. Our students were among more than 97,000 students nationally that participated in the contest.
On Friday June 1, the following national and regional award winners and their French teachers, Michèle Atallah, Michelle Grogan, Jeffrey Klamka and Lizette Liebold were honored at the annual Distribution des Prix at Union College in Schenectady:
Philip Groenwegen, a junior, placed sixth in the nation on the level 5 contest. This gave Philip the number one rank in the Hudson Valley region. Seven students ranked regionally at this level: Kristen Manning (3rd), Jackie Kearney and Daniel Lachapelle (4th), Lauren Thomas (6th), Adam Eisenstein (7th), and Ryan Flood and Morgan Mazone (10th). Michèle Atallah is their teacher.
At level 4, Salome Degroult-Elias was a national winner, ranking ninth. Regionally, junior Daniel Lang place first while Gragory Lang (4th), Lindsay Cheu, Jimmy Ding, Madeline Grisaru, and Anna Kreienberg (5th), Maia Lauria (6th), Marianne Brown (9th) and Gavin Coyle (10th) were also regional winners. Their teacher is Michelle Atallah.

At level 3 Jonah Goldberg (7th), Julia Champagne and Elizabeth Cultrara (9th) and Alexander Carlson and Michael Clawar (10th) were winners at the National level while there were fourteen regional winners: James Lachapelle, and Lindsay Lee (5th) Rachel Piccolino and Aria Shi (6th), Max Rosenberg (7th), Sarah Gifford, Austin Herrmann and Elaine Kehoe (8th), Bethany Caldwell and Camilo Ibanex-Granados (9th), James Barriere, Audrey Donohue, Brett Murphy and Michael Reverdatto (10th) Their teachers are Michèle Atallah and Michelle Grogan.

In the level 2 contest, Freshman Annie Furman ranked fifth in the nation and first in the Hudson Valley region. Other National winners included Shaina Degroult-Elias (8th) and Emma Eisenbraun (9th). Sarah Edgar and Ronald Shi (7th), Miranda Miller (8th), Sarah Coffey, Madeleine Del Caño and Guthrie Diamond (10th) were Hudson Valley Regional winners. Lizette Liebold is their teacher.
Finally, at level 1, the following students achieved national ranks: Lila Johnson (2nd), Danielle Hadjin, Fiona Nugent and Ciaran Hedderman (5th), Ceili Conway and Anne Whitney (6th), Isabelle Grogan, Jane Powers and Iris Zhou (5th), and Linda Li and Liam Escuyer (10th). In the Hudson Valley region, Ciara Cullen and Tyler Hartman ranked 8th, Stephanie Konas ranked ninth and Heath Canfield ranked tenth. Their teacher is Jeffry Klamka.
