A letter from Assistant Superintendent Jody Monroe
An introduction to the Common Core State Standards
Dear parents and students:
The New York State Education Department has adopted several new initiatives over the past couple of years, many of which you may be familiar with. One of the more revolutionary changes is the adoption of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS).
The Common Core State Standards provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn, so teachers and parents know what they need to do to help them. The Standards are designed to be robust and relevant to the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills that our young people need for success in college and careers.
The transition and implementation of the new Math and English Language Arts (ELA) Common Core State Standards are mandated this year by the state. However, Bethlehem began implementing some of the new Standards last school year.
To learn more about the Common Core Standards, you can visit the Common Core State Standards Initiative and the Engage NY websites.
In addition, we have posted additional resources on our own Common Core page that you may find helpful during this time of transition and will continue to update these materials as we move ahead.
Sincerely,
Jody Monroe,
Assistant Superintendent of
Educational Programs and Instruction
Bethlehem Central School District
